Midtown School of Science and Technology
Spider-Man: Homecoming returns to Peter Parker’s teenage years. The brilliant student attends the Midtown School of Science and Technology. The building is actually that of Franklin K. Lane high school, right on the Queens-Brooklyn border which goes right through the school. For cost reasons, the interior scenes were filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.
It’s not easy to be a budding Super hero. Perched on a balcony, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) still hopes to be called to join the Avengers and leaves a message on the answering machine of “Happy” Hogan (Jon Favreau), his chaperone. The building provides a great view over the neighboring viaduct used by the subway. One of the viaduct arches appears in another background setting, filmed from 44thSt.
When leaving Delmar Deli, reputed for selling the “best sandwiches in Queens”, Peter heads straight into an alley to put on his Spider-Man costume. He first passes under the above ground subway line, at the intersection of 31stSt and 23rdAve. Other scenes were filmed in the Astoria area, in particular the one where the he swings on the end of his web in front of Astoria Blvd station with the Triboro Bridge in the background.
A view of the Unisphere filmed from a limousine driving along the Interstate. “New York, Queens”, remarks the owner of the smartphone, a certain Peter Parker. He keeps up a kind of video diary to the detriment of “Happy”, the chauffeur and body guard of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr). This stainless steel globe, visible in the Flushing Meadows park has become the unofficial symbol of Queens. Peter grew up in the Forest Hills area, as did the Ramones whose Blitzkrieg Bop strikes the rhythm for the original movie soundtrack.
Staten Island Ferry
One of the most spectacular action scenes brings together the Master Weaver, the Vulture and a few sinister arms dealers on a ferry to Staten Island. Just as the boat casts off, Spider-Man jumps aboard from the roof of Whitehall terminal. This jump would certainly have its place in the Book of Records. Contrary to the film, the Staten Island ferries haven’t transported cars since 2001.
Spider-Man: Homecoming reserves a sumptuous finale. Tony’s cargo plane, loaded with arms and Chitauri technology, is high jacked by the Vulture, but Spidey intervenes and a merciless struggle in the air spoils the plan. The flying fortress ends up crashing on Coney Island beach, after having taken the top off of the Parachute Jump, a former attraction of the neighboring fairground. At the end of the duel of the titans, Peter observes the battle field seated at the top of the Cyclone, the famous roller coaster.
