If you don’t recognize this location as soon as you see it, but it seems familiar, it’s normal. McGee’s is the bar where the series creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thompson used to come when they were working for David Letterman’s The Late Show, not far from here. They took their inspiration from this bar to create MacLaren’s. The name comes from the associate producer of the series, Carl MacLaren, and that’s why the barman is called Carl in How I Met Your Mother. The atmosphere, with its benches, the fireplace and the interior decoration tones take you right into the series. In fact, the bar has taken advantage of the notoriety not only on the menu where all the dishes and cocktails refer to the series, but also in terms of merchandising. The actors have come several times and it isn’t unusual to see fans with a yellow umbrella…
Goliath National Bank
This 50-story building is used to show the Goliath National Bank building where you’ll find the office of Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) also works here for a while. In reality, it’s the General Motors Building, built between 1964 and 1968, and whose 705 feet facade is adorned with marble.
Buttercup Bake Shop
Victoria (Ashley Williams), that Ted (Josh Radnor) meets at Stuart and Claudia's wedding, works in this pastry shop created in 1999 by Jennifer Appel. She was the co-founder of the famous Magnolia Bakery that she left after a disagreement.
Ted teaches architecture at this famous New York university. During his first lecture, he gets the wrong amphitheater and lectures on architecture to Economics students. The future mother of his children is one of them, although he doesn’t know it. Founded in 1854, Columbia is one of the oldest establishments of higher education in the United States. It includes the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, the biggest architecture library in the USA.
When Marshall looks for where he ate the very first hamburger in New York, the main characters go into several city restaurants, including this one. A great address because the burgers here have a good reputation, not only for their taste but also for the reasonable prices. As a result, place is very busy.
Barney Stinson’s apartment
The bachelor pad of the sly and seductive Barney is located in this quarter where the rents are the highest in the United States. An amusing detail, the ground floor is taken up by a women’s fashion boutique.
Empire State Building
When in episode 12 of season 2, Katie Scherbatsky (Lucy Hall) comes to visit her big sister, Robin (Cobie Smulders), in New York, the teenager tells her that she’s counting on making love for the first time with her boyfriend. Robin tries everything to prevent her. So the visit to the Empire State Building is actually a sexual metaphor, the entrance is foreplay and the top is the act.
Ted plans the perfect New Year’s Eve celebration with five parties in one night. With Ranjit (Marshall Manesh) at the wheel, the main characters stop for a bite at this hot dog place open since 1973 and now a veritable New York institution.
