Avengers: Infinity War, from Atlanta’s studios to the Scottish landscapes

Apart from its mad tempo, Avengers : Infinity War gives some breathtaking sets. It’s a mix between indoor and outdoor shootings. This takes the spectator from New York to Edinburgh, from Vormir to Wakanda.

Avengers: Infinity War, a tiny world travel

Marvel has been writing a book for the last ten years. This is the final chapter of the book. And of course, there are going to be some endings and they're going to be some new beginnings” says Joe Russo, co-director of Avengers: Infinity War. This third official cross-over marks a turning point for Marvel Studio. There are only three movies left before the end of Phase 3. Initiated with Captain America: Civil War in 2016, it will end next year with Avengers 4. The fans are looking for answers after the chaos provoked by Avengers : Infinity War. Thanos seems unstoppable, the Avengers are in deep troubles, and one more time Manhattan is a no man’s land.

Everything starts on Queensboro bridge. Peter Parker’s spider-sense is woken by a donut spaceship in the sky while he is in the school bus. Spider-Man threads its mask and takes advantage of a moment of panic to disappear. This bridge is well-known to link the Queens to Manhattan.

The monument already appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002). The Green Gobelin throws Mary Jane Watson into the water while Spider-Man tries to save the passengers of the Roosevelt Island cable car. The fights in Manhattan between the Thanos’ Black Order, Iron Man, Hulk and Doctor Strange take place in Washington Sqaure Park and some nearby streets. The location and the scene are easily recognizable thanks to the arch in the back. The monument celebrates the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as President of the United States in 1789However, most of the scenes in cities were shot in Pinewood studio in Atlanta.

The scottish surprise

From the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Marvel Studio decided to introduce the come-back of some Avengers in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. The Scarlet Witch and Vision suddenly learn that New York has been the target of an alien attack. This key moment of the movie takes place on Cockburn Street in front of a fast food in the Old Town. The restaurant was just a short-lived set. Right after the end of the production, the shop was already painted to the colors of the new owner, Miss Katie Cupcake.

Scarlet Witch and Vision don’t have the time to understand what was going on, that the Black Order was already trying to kill them. The fight takes place on Royal Mile. According to local officials, Marvel studio chose Edinburgh thanks to its gothic architecture to emphasize the drama of the scene. Then, the battle keeps going in the Edinburgh-Waverley train station. Close to be defeated, the two Avengers are saved at the very last moment by Captain America, Black Widow and Falcon.  The fighting scene was shot on platform number 2 where a giant green background had been put in place to add special effects during the post-production time.

Marvel Studio shot for about seven weeks in Scotland for a final cost estimated to thirteen million of dollars.

Wakanda in Georgia, Vormir in Brazil

It’s in the impenetrable kingdom of Wakanda that Thanos decides to show-up to take possession of the last Infinity Stone. The landscape might recall some memories to Black Panthers fans. The fighting scenes in the Wakanda plains were shot for both blockbusters at the Bouckaert Farm in Fairburn, Georgie, USA.

But one of the most heartbreaking moment of the movie takes place on the frightening Vormir. To build the set of this apocalyptical planet, Marvel Studio flew all the way down to Brazil in Lençois Maranhenses National Park. […] The production shot at the […] Park, at several different lagoons. The park was chosen for its unique visuals of clear white sand dunes surrounded by bright blue pools of fresh water », says Victoria Marino of the society Brazil Production Services. Four days were spent on the field to shoot the sequences on Vormir. However, Victoria Marino warns that “this is such a remote location, accessible only by special 4X4 vehicles and about two hours away from the hotel and any nearby town infrastructure.”

With a budget of 500 million of dollars, Avengers Infitiny War places itself as one of the most expensive movies of all time. But with the fastest opening weekend in history, Avengers 3 might also be one of the most bankable.
