Joker: New York makes up in Gotham

Movie
Scheduled for theatrical release on October 9, 2019, the feature film about the dreaded Joker has taken up residence in New York, Gotham's understudy.

New York is going into the Joker’s madness…

The Joker turns 79 this year. Appearing in the spring of 1940 in the comic book Batman #1, the clown-faced, green-haired crime master terrorizes the people of Gotham, much to the chagrin of the city’s greatest defender, Batman.

Although his particular physique is inspired by that of Conrad Veidt in the film adapted from Victor Hugo’s eponymous novel, The Laughing Man, the supervillain is one of the world’s most famous and emblematic villains. The animated versions of the serial killer, who has been portrayed many times in films by the greatest names such as Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto, also feature well-known actors such as Mark Hamill, Brent Spiner and Michael Emerson.

On October 9, 2019, a new player will be added to this long list. It’s about Joaquin Phoenix. Known notably for his roles as a dresser in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator or for his interpretation of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, it’s a completely different song that the artist is about to unveil.

The Joker returns to terrorize the people of Gotham on the big screen, much to their displeasure. New York has been chosen to represent Gotham once again.

Although the Big Apple is also nicknamed Gotham, that’s not the primary reason for this choice. New York has always served as DC Comics’ understudy for the City of Batman. Its location, crime rate, skyscrapers and architecture have made this huge East Coast megalopolis the perfect candidate to embody the dark Gotham on paper and on screen.
