How do you include filming locations in your trip when the rest of your family isn't excited?

Movie Music Novel TV show
You like to travel to film or series locations, to visit places seen on album covers or in comic books, to visit places that have inspired authors of novels, but unfortunately your family does not share your passion?

Fantrippers offers you some tips to try to convince them, or at least not to miss your favorite places 🙂

1. Include bars and restaurants that appear in movies or series in your days

Lunch or dinner stops are an opportunity to take your family to a restaurant that appears in one of your favorite movies or shows without anyone noticing. Sometimes you can even give them a unique experience, like going to Katz Delicatessen in New York City, an establishment that was featured in the movie When Harry Met Sally, but also serves up huge pastrami sandwiches that are sure to please kids and adults alike.

Another way to enjoy your trip from a pop culture perspective is to look for information on must-see tourist spots. You can visit the Louvre Museum in Paris and remind your partner that this is where the plot of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code novel takes place, which he/she loved.

When visiting the Tower of London, for example, you can show your children that in one of the episodes of The Simpsons, Homer is imprisoned there and that it is even the Queen of England who comes to free him. Being on the spot of a cartoon always has its effect, believe it from our experience 🙂

4. Choose a hotel that is related to a movie, series, music, comic book or novel and explain to your family why it makes you so happy to be there

The Marlin Hotel (themarlinhotel.com)

Here’s a good opportunity to share your passion with your family: stay at a hotel that is important to you and, since you’re spending the night there, take the time to explain why it’s important to you. You can, for example, stay at the Marlin Hotel in Miami and tell them that your favorite band, U2, recorded their 9th album in this hotel and that it feels funny to be there today. In this case, you can even add that Mariah Carey, Kanye West or Gwen Stefani have also stopped by. This should trigger a few “wows” from the younger generation 🙂

5. During a roadtrip, make small photo stops on places of movies or mythical series

A simple tip: while on a road trip, make very quick photo stops and show clips from the movie or series in which this place appears. The Joliet prison in the United States can be a good example: it is located on the mythical Route 66 (so no detour is required). When you explain to your family that this is both the prison from the movie Blues Brothers and the prison from the series Prison Break, it should generate interest.

6. Look for stories related to filming at a location on your trip to tell your family when you get there

Las-ramblas – Banja – Frans Mulder

The best way to get your family members interested in your passion is to give them some information as you go along. As you walk along Las Ramblas in Barcelona, you can tell them that it reminds you of that Ed Sheeran song in which he talks about coming there and dancing around the Sagrada Familia. If it works, you may be asked to stream it from your smartphone to get into the mood 🙂
