“Up ahead, to the right… Yankee Stadium!… An anchor! Something to hold on to! He had been to Yankee Stadium! For World Series games, nothing more…”

The narrator

Tom Wolfe offers with The Bonfire of the Vanities an acerbic radiography of New York and more specifically of all the sharks of finance. Moving from the slums to the inner city, Tom Wolfe depicts Yankee Stadium as a monument standing in the urban jungle to evoke sweet childhood memories for his character as his life prepares to go downhill.

Yankee Stadium at the heart of the novel

A way for the American writer to pay homage to a sports institution, in his audacious satire where issues related to the class gap and racism are addressed. A true masterpiece of modern literature, perfectly transcribing the madness of the 1980s, when everything seemed possible, scratching the veneer of appearances to reveal what the author believes to be the true face of a city to which he does not do any favors, this novel does not hold back.

A mention that does not always please

His mention of Yankee Stadium can thus be seen as a criticism of the quasi-religious relationship that Americans have with their favorite sports teams…

Yankee Stadium

Among the American sports venues, Yankee Stadium is without doubt one of the most famous.

Opened on April 18, 1923 after eleven months of construction, Yankee Stadium became the home of the New York Yankees baseball team.

When it opened, the arena could accommodate 58,000 spectators, but this capacity was quickly increased in the following years. In 2006, the complexe was replaced by a more modern building next door.

Demolition began on September 22, 2008 and was completed on May 13, 2010. U2 and Billy Joel also played there.
