Wu-Tang Clan District
Formed in 1992 around RZA and Ol’ Dirty Bastards, two ambitious rappers, the Wu-Tang Clan quickly took on a notable importance on the New York scene. While the respective members took advantage of their nascent success to pursue their careers in the group and their personal projects, the 1993 release of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the first album, put everyone in agreement. Courted by all the influential labels, RZA’s band asserts an innovative style and does not seem to want to make any concession.
When it comes to the delicate exercise of the video clip and to offer an illustration to the song Can it Be All So SimpleRaekwon and Ghostface sit down near where the Wu-Tang Clan District plaque is today to talk with a glibness about the need to get off the streets to live a more comfortable life in the opulence. All the codes later exploited by the Wu-Tang’s descendants are there, in this video of just over five minutes…
The Wu-Tang Clan had ten members until 2004 and the death of Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
Vanderbilt Avenue & Targee Street
Like the Ramones, the Wu-Tang Clan is part of the very closed club of groups whose name was given to a street. Even if the mythical rap combo is rather a district at the corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and Targee Street.
It is on May 4, 2019, in the presence of Ghostface Killah and Raekwon, that is inaugurated the Wu-Tang Clan District on Staten Island, where the combo made its debut. Ghostface said on this occasion, not without emotion: “You who come from Staten Island like me, know that everything is possible. I knew we were good rappers, probably the craziest, but I never thought it would take us this far.”. Visible at the intersection of Targee Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, the sign takes the form of a most legitimate recognition.
