“Difficulty, five of spades”

Voice of the Game

The meaning of the cards

Discovering the new world in which Arisu and his friends evolve, the young player learns more about one of the great mysteries of the games.

Unable to escape from Tokyo, Arisu and Karube (Kento Yamazaki and Keita Machida) decide to participate in a new game in order to extend their visa. They go to an apartment complex where they tackle a game of “five of spades” difficulty.

Other participants explained that the value corresponds to the level of difficulty and the family corresponds to the category of the event. Thus, spades refer to a physical test, clubs to team games, diamonds to mind games and hearts to treachery games.

The thirteen participants find themselves in a game of Wolf where they will have to avoid being caught by two murderers in this residence. The goal is to simultaneously press two switches hidden within the building.

Wolf in an abandoned apartment complex

Although the action of the series is set in Tokyo, the Japanese capital was very little requested for the shooting. Most of the series was shot in other cities in the country. Thus, the Toei Sendagaya apartments where the wolf game takes place are actually located in Kobe.

The Alice in Borderland crews moved into an old apartment complex, which at the time of the 2019 shoot was completely abandoned for a total renovation. Thus, the building located near the Kita-Suzurandai station is the scene of a deadly ordeal.

The first season of Alice in Borderland received a score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kōeidai

Located in Kobe, close to Kita-Suzurandai Station, 4-chōme-2-15 Kōeidai is a building housing several businesses and apartments.

Renovated during the year 2021, this building is a home for many residents of Kobe City. In the pop culture, it is mainly known for having hosted the shooting of the series Alice in Borderland. You can totally go there but be careful if you want to take pictures, it is not a tourist place and the inhabitants may look at you with a bad eye.
