Wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys, Khal’s future wife
While the first episode of Game of Thrones focuses largely on the Stark family, it also introduces Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), the Targaryen descendant. A young woman forced to marry Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa), a Dothraki as brutal as he is rude. It is within the Verdala palace, here used as the home of Illyrio Mopatis (Roger Allam), that the bride-to-be makes her entrance. To shoot the wedding scene, the production chose to set up by the sea, on the limestone cliffs of the island of Gozo in the archipelago of Malta.
The scene begins with an overview, with the Azure Window, a formidable rock formation suspended above the sea, as a backdrop. A natural monument unfortunately destroyed in March 2017 following a storm.
Dothraki, an invented language
The filming required special logistics and introduced some of the Dothraki language. The showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff called on linguist David J. Paterson to invent Dothraki from the few words used by George R.R. Martin in his novels. David J. Peterson created no less than 1,700 words for the series, drawing on Russian, Swahili, Estonian, Turkish and Inuktitut.
Like the language of the elves in The Lord of the Rings, Dothraki has nowadays its practitioners all over the world. A language with a limited number of words, but quite usable at fan conventions. David J. Peterson also invented the Valyrian. The producers of Game of Thrones chose him from 30 linguists.
The first episode of Game of Thrones drew 6.8 million viewers in the U.S. during its first broadcast.
Azure Window
This natural limestone arch located on the island of Gozo in Malta collapsed on March 8, 2017 following a violent storm.
A major tourist site, the small village of Qawja made it possible to admire the Azure Window, a limestone arch spanning the waves. A rock formation victim of a storm, immortalized by the series Game of Thrones during the first season. The arch measured 28 meters and was made of pale yellow and gray limestone. She now lies at the bottom of the sea.
