Willow (Warwick Davis) to Madmartigan (Val Kilmer)

Imagined by George Lucas, the story of Willow involves the use of grandiose lands. Shot in the UK and New Zealand, the film also warrants some shots in California, at Skywalker Ranch for example, but also at Burney Falls in California. A place that the characters visit during a short sequence.

A tailor-made role

George Lucas first mentioned his idea for Willow to Warwick Davis’ mother when her son played the Ewok Wicket in Return of the Jedi. When the young actor reprises his role in a television special, George Lucas says his meeting with Warwick Davis inspired him to write this story about a people of small stature facing an unprecedented threat in a heroic fantasy world.

Down with the masks

Built around Warwick Davis, Willow doesn’t require him to wear a mask or an overly cumbersome costume like his previous roles. Afterwards, Warwick Davis remained close to his mentor, for whom he played a small role in The Phantom Menace. He also remains popular for playing the evil goblin in the horrific Leprechaun saga and for appearing as Filius Flitwick and Gripsec in several films in the Harry Potter franchise.

He confided about Willow to On Remobine in 2013: “When Willow came out, we were in front of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Rambo 3… There was a lot of competition. But since then, people have discovered the film, they have enjoyed it. Willow is one of those films that parents show their children. It’s a great example of what the 1980s could offer in terms of heroes.”

Burney Falls

One of California’s most popular waterfalls, Burney Falls is located in MacArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park.

Fed by underground springs, this 40-meter high waterfall provides a constant flow of 379 million liters of water per day. Particularly appreciated by Theodore Roosevelt, the latter qualifying them as the eighth wonder of the world, this set of waterfalls has been part of the national natural monuments of the United States since December 1954. Prized for fishing, the site has naturally attracted filming. Films like Stand By Me and Willow have exploited its beautiful landscapes.
