Wadi Rum
In the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia at Wadi Rum
The filming of Lawrence of Arabia began in Jordan on May 15, 1961. Already on site, in Wadi Rum for a month, Peter O’Toole, the interpreter of the main role, spends most of his time acclimatizing to the torrid temperatures.
It is planned to shoot exclusively in the country. King Hussein, who was in power at the time, was extremely accommodating to the production, providing all the logistical assistance necessary for the smooth running of operations.
The Petra concern
David Lean sets up dozens of tents at the foot of the monumental rock formations. The logistics are complex and costly, but on screen, the result is incredible. While the filmmaker plans to film on the archaeological site of Petra, several problems force him to review his plans. Forced to leave Jordan, he continued production in Morocco and Spain, shooting in the Tabernas Desert.
The filming of Lawrence of Arabia took place over sixteen monthssixteen months, from May 15, 1961 to September 21, 1962.
Wadi Rum Protected Area
With its rugged terrain, Wadi Rum bears witness to over one hundred and twenty centuries of human history.
Located in the southwest of Jordan, Wadi Rum covers 742 km2. This wonderful valley with its ochre tones has several remarkable sites such as the Nabatean temple, the Lawrence spring, the Burrah Canyon, the famous Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the Burdah Rock Bridge. Wadi Rum is also a popular site for rock climbers and an exceptional filming location. Its majestic expanses and spectacular landforms have been featured in films such as The Martian, Aladdin, Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, Dune, Prometheus, Red Planet and of course Lawrence of Arabia.
