Volcano
Based in Northern Ireland, using several locations already used by the actors of the HBO series Game of Thrones, the production of the heroic fantasy blockbuster Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves also shot in Iceland, for cutaways. Thus, none of the actors have set foot in the country. The shots in question feature stand-ins filmed from afar in the heart of exceptional landscapes.
Perfect timing
From the beginning, the directors of Dungeons & Dragons plan to shoot in Iceland, at the foot of the Fagradalsfjall volcano. This one, asleep for hundreds of years, is the centerpiece of a breathtaking panorama. However, while everything is in place and the team is planning to orchestrate the eruption of the volcano in CGI, the real volcano starts spewing lava. Jonathan Goldstein and John-Francis Daley jumped at the chance to seize this incredible opportunity. The scene is even more epic than expected.
An angry giant
The sequence in which the horsemen pass in front of the volcano requires very little CGI. Perfectly authentic, the lava works wonders. Thereafter, as the team leaves Northern Ireland, Fagradalsfjall continues to perform throughout the second half of 2021, until 2022. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves captured this unique moment in Iceland’s recent history.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves took first place at the French box office when it was released in France, accumulating more than 80,000 tickets.
Fagradalsfjall Volcano
This volcano, whose name means “the beautiful valley”, erupted in 2021 after sleeping for more than 800 years.
Culminating at 385 meters, the Fagradalsfjall consists of a mountain and a volcano. It is part of a volcanic territory including in particular the Reykjanes and the Keillir. Its unexpected eruption in 2021 has dramatically increased its popularity among tourists. It also gave birth to several lava flows in August 2022. The Fagradalsfjall hosted several filmings including that of the clip for Black Lake, a song from Björk’s Vulnicura album
