Villa (interior)

Movie Babylon Damien Chazelle (2023)
Rising actress Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) manages to get into one of the most exclusive parties of the year. She meets Manny Torres (Diego Calva), an ambitious assistant and is noticed by a producer (Flea). While the exterior scenes of the party were shot at Shea Castle, the interiors were captured at the Ace Hotel, the former United Artist Theatre.

“It’s written in the stars. I am a star!”

Nelly LaRoy (Margot Robbie)

Rather than set up in a studio or any other room, Damien Chazelle chooses to shoot the party scene, one of the great bravura pieces of Babylon, in the ballroom of the Ace Hotel. Formerly known as the United Artist Theatre, it was once the place where silent film stars gathered to screen their films independently.

From silent to talking

Designed by C. Howard Crane, having been the scene of exchanges between Mary Pickford, D. W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin, the Ace Hotel was chosen because of the Spanish Gothic style architecture of its ballroom. Thus, Damien Chazelle’s teams were able to make interesting savings on the decoration. Perfectly authentic because it was built in the silent era, this room has become the scene of a party of XXL proportions. The set designer told Condé Nast Traveler, “You walk into this room that is literally dripping with detail, with this Spanish Gothic architecture.”

A star in the firmament

At the center of the story, alongside Brad Pitt and Diego Calva, Margot Robbie plays one of the greatest roles of her careerin Babylon. She confided in the columns of W Magazine: “Playing a crazy girl is not difficult for me. Back then, in the 1920s, 30-year-olds ran the studios and 20-year-olds became millionaires. There were no rules. It was a completely new industry and nothing was regulated. They had a lot of fun and partied a lot. Nellie is at the center of this world.

Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles

Built in 1927, this building was at its time, with its 74 meters, the tallest building in Los Angeles.

In Spanish Gothic style, inspired by the Cathedral of Segovia in Spain, this institution formerly known as the United Artists Theater was born from the desire of silent film actors to project their films independently. It was designed by C. Howard Crane and counted among its financiers Charlie Chaplin, D. W. Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Later transformed into a university cathedral, it is now known as the Ace Hotel. It has 182 rooms. Its interior, such as its spectacular ballroom, have remained unchanged since the 1920s.
