Velaryon Castle

The producers of House of the Dragon approached the filming in the same way as the producers of Game of Thrones, creating fictional locations from several real ones. King’s Landing, the capital of Westeros, consists of a collage of sites scattered in Croatia, France and Spain. The fief of the Valryon, the historical allies of the Targaryen, being the result of the mixture of the St. Petersburg and the Targaryen. Michael’s Mount and Butrón Castle in Gatika, in the heart of the Spanish Basque Country. Nevertheless, only the tower of Butrón was used. This was added digitally to the main building of St. Michael’s Mount.
A castle like no other
A medieval castle, Butrón seems to have come straight out of a fairy tale. Yet his appearance in the series, when the relationship between the Targaryens and the Velaryons is more strained than ever, rings with a certain gravity. The production only used the tower of this incredible monument. Its appearance is thus furtive but nevertheless remarkable.

Between digital technology and traditional shooting
House of the Dragon was able to debut HBO’s new filming system, consisting of a set of state-of-the-art screens that allow directors to film actors in different environments right in the heart of the studios. A process already used by Disney for the Star Wars series, which has not prevented travel to real sites in Spain, such as the castle of Butrón, in Croatia and even in France.
10 years separate the events told in episode 5 and episode 6 of House of the Dragon.
Butrón
A formidable vestige of the Middle Ages, this castle was almost completely rebuilt in 1878 by Francisco de Cubas.
Inspired by Bavarian castles, Butrón is located in Gatika, in the province of Vizcaya. Designed as an ornamental monument and not as a dwelling, this building has an impractical layout of its various rooms. It is surrounded by a park with palm trees and other exotic plants. Open to the public, it is the object of admiration of Kate Middleton. She said she had dreamed of getting married there.
