Music Peace Sells... but Who's Buying ? Megadeth (1986)
Megadeth mascot Vic Rattlehead poses behind a "For Sale" sign in front of the United Nations building as war rages. Dave Mustaine's band didn't wait long before making their mark. His second firebrand exposing without detour a speech tinged with politics.

“Can you put a price on peace?”

Dave Mustaine

It is after a bass introduction by Dave Ellefson, that Dave Mustaine sings the lyrics of the song Peace Sells. The lyrics refer to both the title of the song and the album, but also to the cover illustration. For Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying involves a political discourse that asks why nations go to war with each other when peace is within reach. Dave Mustaine wonders why, when peace is for sale, no one seems interested.

War and Peace

The cover of Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying? is the work of Ed Repka, an American illustrator known for having created Vic Rattlehead, Megadeth’s mascot. This last one having been exploited on many discs over the years. The creature is represented here as a kind of real estate agent in charge of selling the United Nations building while chaos reigns in New York. Note that the artist has signed several variations of this cover for the reissues of the album.

A thrash metal artist

Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying did not have an easy gestation. At the time homeless, Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson had to fight to impose their vision of a music already very asserted and marked by their respective talents on guitar and bass. Finally, the two men managed to secure a budget of $25,000 with which they hired Randy Burns, an independent producer. The rage in the belly, confronted with various problems, the singer records all the pieces, which he wrote and composed himself. Upon its release, Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying immediately found its audience and established Megadeth as a leading band in the thrash metal scene. A band finally integrated into the famous American Big 4 alongside Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer.

500 000

The single Peace Sells has sold 500,000 copies.

United Nations Headquarters

The United Nations was founded after the Second World War, in 1945, to preserve world peace.

Peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health crises, equality between men and women, governance, food production… are all missions that the UN and its 193 members have set for themselves.

The headquarters of the United Nations is located in New York. It was inaugurated on January 9, 1951, built on land donated by John Davison Rockefeller Junior.

The building benefits from an extraterritoriality regime. This means that no member of the U.S. security forces may enter the building without authorization from the Secretary-General, the highest official of the institution.
