The Twins

TV show Game of Thrones (2011)
Robb Stark (Richard Madden) and his army arrive at the gates of the Twins, the Frey family estate. Walder Frey (David Bradley)

Based at Castle Ward, where it recreates Winterfell, the Game of Thrones production also makes use of the surrounding area, using several locations on the same estate. The scene in which Robb Stark (Richard Madden) and his mother Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) gaze at the Twins, Walder Frey’s (David Bradley) castle, was filmed at Audley Castle, not far from Castle Ward. The same site, filmed from a different angle, was also used to create Moat Cailin, the place where Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik Cassel (Ron Donachie) meet Robb Stark and his men. Finally, Audley Castle also witnessed the setting up of the Lannister camp, when the Lannisters welcome Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and the Mountain clans, when the latter return from Eyrie, the seat of House Arryn.

Particularly used in the early seasons, the Castle Ward estate brings together a considerable number of geographically distant locations in the series. A boon for the showrunners. The latter were able to make substantial savings even though there was no guarantee that the show would be a success with the public. Subsequently, the production did not return to Castle Ward. A place that has since become a must on tours organized for fans of the series. The latter can then verify that even if the places are very recognizable, many digital inlays have been made to give birth to the glorious buildings and other castles. All interior scenes were produced at Paint Hall Studios in Belfast.

Audleys Castle

A 15th century building, Audley Castle is located in County Dow in Northern Ireland. It takes its name from its owner in the 16th century.

Audley Castle consists of a three-storey tower, a courtyard and a small wall. Located on the Castle Ward estate, it was once near a town called Audleystone. A town that has disappeared since the inhabitants left for America in the 1850s. Audley Castle is now part of a public park. It was used to represent the Twins, the castle of the Frey family in the Game of Thrones series.
