The Higher Plane
Tulsa King starts with a nice spin. As he arrives at the real Tulsa airport, the character played by Sylvester Stallone finds himself in front of a business whose real address is actually located in Oklahoma City. The production of the series having indeed taken place between the two cities.
Juicy business
The Higher Ground magazine, run in the series by Martin Starr, a defector from Judd Apatow’s comedy series Freaks & Geeks, was created out of a former Texaco gas station located across from the OKC Farmers Public Market in Oklahoma City. Some adjustments were nevertheless necessary. Left abandoned for years, the premises have undergone a small refreshment. The old gas pump canopy and the main building were repainted white and the front of the marijuana store was completely redesigned. The interiors, how often, were shot in studio, always in Oklahoma City.
Upset Cowboy
Taylor Sheridan wanted to work with Sylvester Stallone for a long time. The latter did not hesitate for long when the showrunner came knocking at his door. All this without having any illusions about the role that Taylor Sheridan was going to offer him: “I knew that no one was going to buy me as a just cowboy, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to play. Unbeknownst to me, Taylor was working on this project where this mafioso goes west and steps into that classic fish-out-of-water situation that we all love. When Taylor called and I read the script, I knew that the role of Dwight Manfredi taps into my desire to play that kind of cowboy character.”
Tulsa King is not the first title under which the series was considered. It was indeed to be called Kansas City.
Exchange Avenue & South Klein Avenue
Not far from the banks of the Oklahoma River, this former Texaco service station has been abandoned.
All that remains today of the old Texaco service station is a faded sign. Located opposite the OKC Farmers Public Market, this commercial space has retained the awning under which the petrol pumps were once placed. The station is located off Exchange Avenue, near Crosstown Expy.
