Surroundings of Bavmorda Castle

Movie Willow Ron Howard (1988)
If the castle of Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) was built from scratch in an old slate quarry in Wales, it was integrated thanks to the magic of special effects in the heart of Tongariro National Park, in New Zealand, where years later The Lord of the Rings would be shot.

Bavmorda (Jean Marsh)

Most of the production of Willow took place in the United Kingdom, but the crews also did some shooting in New Zealand, in Tongariro National Park. A preserved place used to depict the surroundings of the evil witch Bavmorda’s castle (Jean Marsh).

Magic and witchcraft

Motivated by his vision to produce one of the greatest adventure films of the seventh art, George Lucas still keeps in mind the need to save money. Thus, most of the filming of Willow takes place in Ireland, England and Wales.

A few shots, when the characters are in the forest, were also captured in the vicinity of the Skywalker Ranch. George Lucas also wanted to go to China but the government refused him categorically. He then decided to do some shooting in New Zealand to recreate the surroundings of the castle where the final battle of the film takes place.

Cult film with a delay

Very ambitious, Willow did not meet the massive success that George Lucas hoped for at the time of its release. Disappointed, he was able to appreciate the public’s approval of the film when it was released on video. The years transformed Willow into a cult film. Now considered a classic, it led to the belated production of a sequel, in the form of a series produced by Disney.
