Strawberry Field

Music Strawberry Fields Forever The Beatles (1973)
Strawberry Fields Forever is, along with Penny Lane, one of the Beatles' most historic songs for the simple reason that it too takes place in Liverpool. Based on John Lennon's childhood memories, this song is one of the band's most popular.

Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to strawberry fields. Nothing is real. And nothing to get hung about. Strawberry Fields forever.”

The Beatles

In August 1966, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney decide by mutual agreement to stop performing. Wishing to compose more complex pieces, they set to work. While Paul McCartney wrote Penny Lane, John Lennon summoned his childhood memories and gave birth to Strawberry Fields Forever, articulating his prose around the Salvation Army park he frequented as a child.

Rock and roll strawberries

John Lennon works on Strawberry Fields Forever, one of his most ambitious songs, between takes on the set of Richard Lester’s film How I Won the War. He then recalls his childhood, when he climbed the wall of Strawberry Field in Liverpool and listened with passion to the Salvation Army band play. It is on the beach of Almeria and in the desert of Tabernas that his inspiration comes, hundreds of kilometers from his hometown.

Legacy

Strawberry Fields Forever quickly became a fan favorite and certainly a testament to the adventurous nature of its author and the Beatles as a whole. In 1973, as Strawberry Field Park underwent modifications, a new building was named John Lennon Court.

Upon the Beatle’s death in 1980, his estate left money to the orphanage on the site. In 1984, Yoko Ono decided to donate £50,000 to keep the structure open, although it eventually closed its doors much later. Over the years, the gate, as well as the walls, have been covered with signs of affection from fans.

Strawberry Fields Forever is the first song for which the Beatles used a mellotron.

Strawberry Field

A park owned by the Salvation Army, Strawberry Field inspired John Lennon to write one of the Beatles’ greatest songs.

Site of the mansion of George Warren, a wealthy navigator, in 1870, Strawberry Field passed through several hands until it was bought by the Salvation Army in 1934. It then housed a home for children until 2005. Since the passage of the Beatles, the gates of the park have been replaced by replicas. The site was first opened to the public in September 2019. It now houses a training center for young people, a space reserved for exhibitions, where the place is told in photos, a café and a shop.
