Strange Manor
In the Earth Universe 1999999 (the Marvel Cinematic Universe), there are three Sanctums located in three strategic cities: London, Hong Kong and New York. Each Sanctum is guarded by a master of the mystic arts.
No matter what reality Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) evolves in, the Sanctum Sanctorum is always his headquarters and is irrevocably located in New York.
Known as Strange Manor in popular culture, it is located at 177a Bleecker Street. For the film, the teams decided instead to set up their camera in Greenwich village, in this beautiful cobbled street.
Doctor Strange
Steven (Benedict Cumberbatch) finds herself at the New York City shrine following an explosion (due to Kaecilius’ attack on the London shrine) that propels her through a fixed-dimensional portal connecting Kamar-Taj in Nepal with New York. Lost in the sanctuary, he will protect the place from Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen), which will allow him to become the new master of the place.
Thor: Ragnarok
Steven summons Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to the sanctuary to exchange with him. He wants the Asgardians to leave Earth as soon as possible and helps him find Odin (Anthony Hopkins) in Norway.
Avengers: Infinity War
The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is sent back to Earth by Heimdall directly to the shrine to inform Strange of Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) arrival on Earth.
Avengers: Endgame
The Avengers travel back in time to retrieve the various stones in the past. Hulk meets the Ancient One in the sanctuary. The character played by Tilda Swinton gives up the time stone to her, not without difficulty.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Peter (Tom Holland) goes to the shrine to see with Strange if it’s possible to make the planet forget he’s Peter Parker. The spell doesn’t go as planned and creates a rift in the multiverse, projecting several super villains, enemies of Spider-Man, from universes other than his own.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the sumptuous house adopts several environments but always remains more or less standing.
The Sanctum Sanctorum is an emblematic place in the Doctor Strange narrative arc and plays a central role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It appears throughout the hero’s travels in parallel universes and hosts one of the most spectacular action scenes of the film, when Stephen Strange confronts his variant in a totally devastated New York.
It is not far from Sanctum Sanctorum, while in another reality, that Stephen Strange and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) clash with an angry pizza vendor. A character played by Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi’s best friend and favorite actor. Present in almost all of the director’s films since Evil Dead, their first feature film, Bruce Campbell has always been present to make more or less furtive appearances or to interpret more important roles under the direction of Sam Raimi. His presence in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a treat for the fans of the first movie.
A film adaptation of the wizard has been planned since 1986. Wes Craven was even considered as director since 1992, before David S. Goyer in 2001 and Guillermo del Toro in 2008.
280 W 12th St
The building at 280 W 12th St is located in the Greenwich neighborhood.
The Greenwich neighborhood is a predominantly residential neighborhood located in southwest Manhattan. Originally, Greenwich village was a small rural village before being encompassed by New York. It has the particularity of not having its streets oriented on the Manhattan grid plan.
In pop culture, Greenwich Village is best known as the neighborhood where Monica’s apartment is located in Friends.
