St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague
When awareness about harassment was not as high as it is today, Linkin Park was already talking about this issue. It must be said that, 14 years later, Chester Bennington will kill himself, haunted by sexual abuse during his childhood, harassment and drug problems. A call for help well before its time.
In the video for Numb, a young high school girl, played by Briana Evigan, is in the grip of a deep malaise. In class, her teacher bullied her for her drawings. Her classmates make fun of her, push her around, and walk away when she arrives. At home, same scenario. Her mother scolds her about her art, which is of undeniable quality. The young woman ends up running away and finds herself in the nave of a cathedral.
This place of worship is not unknown, since throughout the clip, the members of the group interpret this piece of anthology. The gothic architecture lends itself perfectly to the depth of the lyrics but also to the sounds that made the band’s reputation.
Although the exterior shooting and some interior shots took place in Prague and at St. Vitus Cathedral, not everything was filmed there. Suffering from severe abdominal and back pain, Chester Bennington was forced to withdraw. The shots with Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell and Rob Bourdon were then shot in a similar cathedral in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, St. Vitus Cathedral plays its role perfectly and remains the main shooting location of the Numb clip, just like the Charles Bridge of the Czech city or the Johannes Kepler Grammar School where the young Briana Evigan is supposed to study.
In 2018, the Numb video crossed the 1 billion view mark on YouTube thanks to the strong fan response after Chester Bennington’s death.
St. Vitus Cathedral
The largest and most important place of worship in Prague, St. Vitus Cathedral has hosted many coronations of Czech kings and queens.
The third building of the same name on the same site, St. Vitus Cathedral became especially important after the creation of the Prague bishopric in 973. The present building dates from 1419, but its construction was slowed down by the Hussite wars. It was only in the second half of the 19th century that it was renovated and completed. Consecrated in 1929, it is particularly appreciated for its stained glass windows, its St. Wenceslas chapel and its immense nave.
