“At the time when I studied in Poitiers, was in Smarves, a man named Perrin Dandin, honorable man, good ploughman, singing at the lectern, man of credit, appointed all the lawsuits of the region and emptied quarrels by seating the parties at the cabaret.”

Excerpt from the Tiers-Livre of François Rabelais

If he is known in the region of Poitiers and beyond for the antics of Gargantua and Pantagruel (the dolmen, Mirebeau) described in the eponymous books, François Rabelais also put his pen to paper to paint the portrait of towns in the department of Vienne like Smarves in the Tiers-Livre.

Like René Descartes, Joachim du Bellay and Francis Bacon after him, François Rabelais took courses at the University of Poitiers, probably between 1524 and 1527. Many times, he refers to the capital of Poitiers in his books, but also to the surrounding towns. In Smarves, he crosses the road of Perrin Dandin.

Today, the city of Pictou is still marked by the seal of François Rabelais. A downtown street, a CROUS building and a college are named after him. As for the revered Order of the Bitard, a student brotherhood of the city’s university created in 1922, its purpose is to : “bring to life the orgiastic and pantagruelic legacy left by Rabelais, student of Poitiers in 1431.” Thus, during the 69th Student Week, named every year as such, they go on the footsteps of their illustrious predecessor.
