Site of the crash
The historic town of Fort Macleod, whose origins date back to the late 19th century, hosted the filming of much of the opening scene of The Last of Us. The use of digital effects is essential for Craig Mazin, one of the two showrunners but also director. It was necessary to use them to crash an airliner into the street.
A city in quarantine
Production thus manages to loop the entire area. The shooting takes place at night, in order to limit the disturbance. Many extras are hired to give the riot scenes a very realistic look. Several controlled explosions are filmed and finally, a plane comes crashing down, generating a gigantic fireball, a few meters away from the car in which are the main people played by Pedro Pascal, Nico Parker and Gabriel Luna.
Apocalypse now
Several buildings on Fort Macleod Avenue are made up. For example, a movie theater front is recreated to give the illusion that Fort Macleod is actually Austin, Texas. Director Craig Mazin uses small sequence shots to encourage immersion, in a very disturbing atmosphere. Despite this, the filming went very well and soon Fort Macleod was back to being a quiet place.
A star in the making
The introduction of The Last of Us features the young British actress Nico Parker. The latter is the daughter of actress Thandiwe Newton and writer/director Ol Parker. The series marks his third screen appearance after his performances in Tim Burton’s Dumbo and the HBO series The Third Day.
The Last of Us series is a collaboration of five production companies, namely Naughty Dog, Playstation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, The Mighty Mint and World Games.
