Silver Lake

TV show The Last of Us (2023)
Ellie (Bella Ramsey) takes refuge in an abandoned house where she tries to heal Joel (Pedro Pascal). Seriously wounded, the latter is dying while the young woman looks for food in the surrounding countryside. It was then that she shot a deer not far from the community of Silver Lake. A village known in our reality as Waterton Park.

I sensed doubt in there.

David (Scott Shepherd)

It’s no coincidence that the producers of The Last of Us chose the Calgary area to shoot. On the one hand, the city itself was welcoming with reasonable prices and a number of facilities, but on the other hand, the surrounding area offered a variety of possibilities between beautiful natural landscapes and small picturesque villages. And it is precisely one of them that the showrunners have chosen to appear on the screen Waterton Park, where Ellie (Bella Ramsey) meets David, a fanatical pastor at the head of a congregation in distress.

A player on all levels

Several video game actors also make an appearance in the series. This is the case of Troy Baker, Joel’s interpreter in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, here in the skin of James, David’s (Scott Shepherd) right-hand man. If Troy Baker has never nurtured the ambition to play Joel again in the TV series, he was nevertheless happy to appear on screen, as he explained to the magazine TV Line: “So, when they came to me and Neil was like,”Dude, we have a role for you,” I’m like, “Shut up.” And he goes, “I want you to play James.” I’m like, “Man, thank you — who’s James?” He’s one of those characters that a lot of people could’ve glossed over. He’s clearly prominent in the game, but he’s nowhere near as visible as he is in our show.

A character brought to light

Troy Baker continued, “Something that I think we’ve done very, very well with the show is, we’ve taken characters that in some ways may have existed on the periphery of our story —because the nature of the game is this, you’re playing as Joel, we need to see the world and the story from Joel’s perspective. When you’re playing as Ellie, you need to see the world through the perspective of Ellie. But with this medium, we have the ability to pick up and move camera and spend some time with other characters like we did in Episode 3 with Bill and Frank, or in Episode 6 where we get to spend more time with Tommy and especially Maria. So, for me to be able to have a role like this, it became this cool challenge (…). How do I not make him a villain? And that’s just what I sought to do in every scene.
