Shinjuku Station
XYZ, three letters to write on a board in Shinjuku station in Tokyo and anyone can ask for help to Ryô Saeba, the detective of City Hunter. The worst cases, he can solve it thanks to his great dexterity in shooting. Sensitive files conducted in the Japanese capital.
City Hunter, detective duo
Under the title City Hunter are two sharp shooters. Ryô is a real cleaner, accepting any kind of business. His partner is Hideyuki Makimura, an ex-policeman.
Their professional relationship is shattered when he is murdered by Union Teope, a local underworld cartel. Hideyuki’s sister, Kaori, asks Ryô to become her partner. This is the beginning of a new era where the detective promises never to kill anyone again.
Chalk messages at Shinjuku Station
To contact Ryô and Kaori, nothing is easier. Just write XYZ with chalk on a board in Shinjuku station. It should be noted that when the manga series was created in 1985 by Tsukasa Hôjô, there was no cell phone. Applicants have the option of placing an ad in the newspaper or opting for the message channel on the board.
The painting would be located in the East Exit lobby as readers can see in the Angel Heart series the sequel to City Hunter. In this story, Tsukasa Hôjô draws the Alta building, its gigantic video screen and the MyCity sign on this side of the station.
The business that City Hunters accept is often poorly paid, if at all. Ryô tends to say yes when a beautiful woman asks him for help. This makes Kaori very angry. To stop the cad in his borderline aggressive endeavors, she takes out a huge hammer.
From City Hunter to Nicky Larson
In France, the manga City Hunter knows its hours of glory thanks to the Club Dorothée. The youth program of TF1 broadcasts Nicky Larson – his name in France – from 1990 to 1995. Ryô becomes Nicky and Kaori becomes Laura.
A film, Niki Larson, was made with Jackie Chan in 1992, while director Philippe Lachaud unveiled City Hunterin 2018. City Hunter is a franchise that still works very well today. The Panini editions have published the series again in a Perfect version.
City Hunter was adapted into an animated series of 140 episodes from 1987 to 1991.
