Shiganshina District
A cloistered world
It’s been more than a hundred years since mysterious Titans surfaced, forcing humanity to retreat behind three fifty-meter high walls. The city of Shiganshina is the first city behind the first wall: the Maria Wall.
A German inspiration
The universe of Attack of the Titans created by Hajime Isayama, although it is totally fictional, drew its inspirations from reality. Many fans felt that the author was inspired by a German city to create the city of Shiganshina.
Although the author never confirmed it, the city of Nördlingen would be one of his main sources of influence. There are several similarities between the two cities, notably the gothic architecture and the presence of ramparts.
Attack of the Titans is composed of 34 volumes
The origin of the manga
Before creating his universe, Hajime Isayama had the idea ofAttack of the Titans following an altercation in an Internet café. While he was working peacefully, a drunken customer grabbed him by the collar and threatened him. It was then that he realized that humans could be intimidating and terrifying, just like his Titans.
Nördlingen
Nördlingen is a German city located in the state of Bavaria, in the district of Danube-Ries.
Former imperial city, Nördlingen is one of the three German cities to have preserved complete ramparts. Its very medieval style has been used by many filmmakers as a setting: from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory to the 2002 movie Bibi Blocksberg.
In pop culture, it is also known as the main source of inspiration for mangaka Hajime Isayama for his district of Shiganshina in Attack on Titan.
