Shangri-La Studio

Music Return of the Dream Canteen Red Hot Chili Peppers (2022)
Thirteenth album of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Return of the Dream Canteen gave the musicians the opportunity to collaborate again with producer Rick Rubin in the Shangri-La Studio in Malibu. A legendary place, once shaped by Bob Dylan, where many legends have worked over the years.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

While working on Unlimited Love, their twelfth album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers also wrote and recorded songs for Return of the Dream Canteen. Marking the return of John Frusciante as guitarist, the two records were produced by Rick Rubin at the Shangri-La Studio, a mythical place located in Malibu not far from the beaches that Anthony Kiedis and Flea had frequented all their lives.

A spicy album

Already responsible for a double album, Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers decide this time to record about fifty tracks at the same time but to distribute them on two distinct discs, in order to release them in 2022, a few months apart. Very comfortable, the musicians benefit from the experience of Rick Rubin, with whom they already collaborated on Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Very inspired, the combo works hard at the Shangri-La Studio, following in the footsteps of Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath or ZZ Top.

Back to the funk

Tippa My Tongue, the first single, was released on August 19, 2022, a few days before the release of the record. To shoot the video clip, entirely produced in studio, Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and John Frusciante call upon Malia James. Very psychedelic, this track allows the group to revive the funk of its beginnings while making multiple nods to the Californian culture of the 1960s and 1970s.

50

The Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded 50 tracks during the Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen sessions at the Shangri-La.

Morning View Drive

A recording studio owned by producer Rick Rubin, the Shangri-La was once a ranch.

The ranch was built in 1958. Rented in the 1970s by the group The Band, it was renovated in 1970 according to the directives of Bob Dylan and The Band. It is also within these walls that part of Martin Scorsese’s rockumentary The Last Waltz is filmed. In 2011, Rick Rubin, the legendary producer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer and Johnny Cash, bought the place. Over the years, many artists have recorded albums there such as Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Metallica, Ed Sheeran, The Strokes, Weezer or even Neil Young and ZZ Top.
