Partially destroyed, burned and ransacked, Santa Maria del Pi is still there, exposing to the whole world its wonderful stained glass windows and its characteristic architecture. If many sets were built in studio, for the majority of the interior scenes, Uncharted was indeed shot in front of and in this famous church. The director Ruben Fleischer was driven by a fervent desire to pay tribute to the monument, which he has long considered his favorite in Barcelona.

Here, no modifications were made by the decorators. Everyone moved between these very old walls, with great deference, to pack a scene that was to be extended in an environment that was, in contrast, fabricated from scratch in a Berlin studio. It’s funny that at this point in Uncharted, the characters separate. While Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and Chloe Frazer (Sophia Taylor Ali), after finding the secret entrance to a tunnel in the church, progress through some kind of catacombs, built in Berlin, Victor Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) walks through the streets of Barcelona. The three characters communicate through earpieces. Orchestrating such a scene required a lot of attention to detail in order to correctly synchronize the dialogues and reactions of the actors, who are in fact separated by more than 1800 km.
Uncharted has led to the writing of a novel, which is scheduled for release in 2022.
Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi
Emblematic monument of the Gothic district of Barcelona, this fifteenth-century church is dedicated to the cult of the Virgin Mary, here called Santa Maria del Pi.
Hit hard by the earthquake in Catalonia in 1428, the building saw its facade partially destroyed. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the church was also damaged but still resisted. Several renovations restore its beauty and modify a little its decoration. In particular, at the end of the 19th century, all the baroque elements were removed. In 1936, a group of anarchists intended to destroy the monument by fire, but Santa Maria del Pi held out.
