Sacred Heart Church
John Wick visits several churches on his journey in his fourth adventure. In one of them, the Sacred Heart Church in Berlin, the character played by Keanu Reeves seeks redemption from his former family. Partly used, the Sacred Heart Church lent its magnificent sets to the shooting of Chad Stahelski’s film, even though some scenes were most likely shot in a studio.
Berlin put to work
A film city widely used by productions from all over the world, Berlin has hosted Chad Stahelski’s team at several locations. The director was able to take advantage of the facilities of the Babelsberg studio in Potsdam. The latter is known as one of the most modern and largest film studios in Europe. It houses 21 sound stages and offers filmmakers several outdoor locations, a large water tank, and even a life-size reproduction of a commuter train.
An actor in perpetual learning
Keanu Reeves confided in Screenrant about his approach to the character: “I think the more time I spend on a martial arts film, the more chance I have to improve. I’m still not very good in martial arts but I’m trying really hard to improve. Progress also allows the director to do more. I used to do stunts like a 180 degree turn, and now I do a 180 turn in reverse with a gear shift and a gun in my hand. Action movies are becoming more complex than before.“
With 169 minutes on the clock, John Wick 4 is the longest film in the franchise.
Sacred Heart Church
Built from 1897 to 1898, this Berlin church adopts the neo-Byzantine architectural style.
Designed by architect Christoph Hehl, the Church of the Sacred Heart in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg was born as part of the development of the German capital at the end of the 19th century. Transformed into a refuge during the Second World War, it then became, after the construction of the Wall, one of the seats of passive resistance. Its architecture was decided to allow the building to stand out from other religious buildings in the district. It houses an organ by Franz Eggert dating from 1899. It is the largest instrument of its kind still in working order today.
