The production of The Northman moves to Northern Ireland. On the Clandeboye Estate, near the city of Bangor, director Robert Eggers has a large plot of land where he can recreate a Russian village with great fidelity. While the place usually hosts weddings and other festive celebrations, the filmmaker orchestrates one of the wildest scenes of The Northman there.
Several houses are built and then partially destroyed by fire. In the vicinity, Robert Eggers also shoots the sequence during which the berserkers, these Viking warriors insensitive to fear and pain, go into a trance to prepare for the assault. Filmed in sequence, the attack sees Alexander Skarsgård advancing between the buildings armed with an axe that he uses to slash his enemies.
Alexander Skarsgård is originally from Sweden. Like his brother Gustaf before him, the famous interpreter of Floki in the series Vikings, the actor plays in The Northman a Viking warrior. A role for which the actor has prepared a lot, in order to get an impressive musculature. From the beginning of the training, the actor discovered in True Blood can count on the accompaniment of coach Magnus Lygdback. It feeds exclusively on proteins every two to three hours to accumulate 3700 calories each day. The goal of his trainer is to develop Alexander Skarsgård’s muscle mass to bring it closer to that of a wolf and a bear, the two totem animals of the character. Magnus Lygdback having clarified his astonishing method in the columns of the site Allociné in May 2022: “You see actors all the time saying in interviews that they’ve been practicing for several hours a day. But this is not necessarily true. They were able to exercise for four hours a day, but what did their gym session consist of? I never train my clients for more than an hour, because what doesn’t happen in the first hour won’t happen in the second. All you do after the first hour is start to weaken your body. So it was one hour a day, six days a week. Then, during the shooting, five days a week.“

Clandeboye Estate
Located about twenty kilometers from Belfast, this vast site of more than 8 km2 hosts weddings and other festive events throughout the year.
Former home of Lindy, the Marquise of Dufferin and Ava, the Clandeboye estate dates back to 1674. The buildings having been built in 1801. Composed of woods, gardens, lawns and a lake, this territory notably shelters the largest forest of deciduous trees in Northern Ireland as well as a wide variety of animals such as squirrels, fallow deer, ospreys and pipistrelle bats. Sometimes used as a filming location, such as during the production of the film The Northman, the estate is open for rental for various celebrations.
