Russian prison
For once, the prison that Jim Hopper (David Hopper) finds himself in at the beginning of Stranger Things season 4 is not located in the United States but in Vilnius, Lithuania. While they could have built sets in the facilities of Netflix in Georgia or on the side of Albuquerque, the Duffer brothers preferred to relocate the production to give an even more realistic patina to the penitentiary where the character played by David Harbour is held.
The actors take place in the real Lukiskes prison, closed since 2019. The atmosphere is truly special and is enough to put the whole team in a state of mind that is conducive to the emergence of real terror. Almost by chance, David Harbour finds himself for the second time in a few months behind bars in a Russian prison after the shooting of the Marvel blockbuster Black Widow. A film during which the American actor had also sent messages to the Duffer brothers to inform them of the appearance of his character and the prison so that they can imagine different settings for Stranger Things.
The Lukiskes prison was the first set of this scale to be relocated abroad for the filming of Stranger Things, and it is also one of the most spectacular settings. A place open to visitors, whose popularity should now only increase following the broadcast of the show worldwide. It is amusing to note that the conciliatory guard that Jim Hopper rubs shoulders with in the prison sequences of Stranger Things is played by a certain Tom Wlaswhiha. An actor noticed in Game of Thrones, where he played a faceless man brought to help Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) while she was rotting in the prison of the Lannister family.
Stranger Things is the first drama to take place in Lukiskes prison in Lithuania.
Lukiškės Prison
Centenary penitentiary of Vilnius in Lithuania, this famous prison closed its doors definitively in 2019.
Located on the square of the same name in the city center of Vilnius, Lukiskes prison is known to have been occupied by the Gestapo and the Saugumas during the Nazi occupation. Subsequently, it is mainly used to receive detainees being transferred and has only 180 permanent prisoners. Remarkable for its architecture, it closed in 2019 before being taken over by the film crews for Season 4 of Stranger Things. It has hosted several celebrities including the leader of Noir Désir Bertrand Cantat, the writer Maksim Haretski and the poet Tomasz Zan.
