Rue de Lyon
It was in 1935 that Albert Camus began to take notes, ideas and anecdotes for his first novel. A former member of the French Resistance and a graduate in literature, he did not begin writing until four years later. He imagines his plot in Algeria, his native country. He was born on November 7, 1913 in Dréan, on the eastern coast. The main character lives on rue de Lyon in the Belcourt district. Today, it is located in the wilaya of Algiers, on rue Mohamed-Belouizdad. This popular district three kilometers southwest of the capital’s downtown area has a 1.6 km long waterfront.
“The Stranger describes the nakedness of man in the face of the absurd,” as the novelist-journalist points out in Notebooks II published by Gallimard. In this, the novel is tinged with philosophy. A discipline that Albert Camus studied at the university and whose dissertation had as subject the thoughts of Plotinus and Augustine of Hippo.
With 7 million copies of the paperback version, The Stranger is the best-selling paperback of any publisher.
Rue Mohamed Belouizdad
Today rue Mohamed-Belouizdad, the former rue de Lyon is located in the popular and working-class district of the wilaya of Algiers, the former Belcourt district during the French colonisation.
Located three kilometres south-west of the capital’s city centre, the district has a coastline of just over one kilometre. Not far from this artery giving its name to the district, one finds the cave of Cervantes, a place where the Spanish writer hid from the king of Algiers, but also the national library of Algeria, the Garden of test, the museum of fine arts of Algiers and five mosques. It owes its current name to an Algerian politician, revolutionary and nationalist. Two cable cars link the district to the heights of Algiers.
