Shot exclusively in and around Los Angeles, You People operated one of the city’s most prominent restaurants, Rosco’s House of Chicken & Waffles. An establishment in which Jonah Hill, Nia Long and Eddie Murphy took place during one of the most important sequences of the scenario.
Love and prejudice
Rather than use the front of the Roscoe’s and shoot the meeting between Ezra (Jonah Hill) and his in-laws in a studio, director Kenya Barris got permission to film inside the restaurant as well. A nice way to pay tribute to this Los Angeles institution that is the Roscoe. Where some of the big names in sports, politics, cinema and music such as Barack Obama, Shaquille O’Neal and Snoop Dog have gone to eat.
Declaration of love
Shooting in Los Angeles was very important for Kenya Barris, as he explained to Coming Soon: “We wanted to write a love letter to LA and all its parts. That’s also why I wanted to use the song Last Time That I Checc’s by Nipsey Hussle. I think this artist is part of the DNA of Los Angeles (…). For me, in general, music is like an emotional lotion. I heard Quincy Jones say that and his words resonated with me. Everything I do, I do to music.“
