River

Movie The Northman Robert Eggers (2022)
As an adult, years after his father's death, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) finds himself in Russia preparing to loot a village. Installed on a drakkar, he rows towards his destination, on a river that the production found in Northern Ireland.

“I will avenge you, Father! I will save you, Mother! I will kill you, Fjolnir!”

Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård)

This scene, the first in which the adult version of Amleth appears, required the construction of a real Viking longship. The craftsmen of the production thus consulted registers and more generally all the information at their disposal to show the greatest fidelity towards the true Viking boats. Afterwards, director Robert Eggers set the ship and its impressive bow on the River Bann in Northern Ireland.

In general, Eggers made a point of working with historians to make the sets, costumes and props as authentic as possible, while at the same time going back to a time before Christianity really influenced Viking culture. Professor Neil Price, an archaeologist at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, worked on the film and later stated that he believed it was the most accurate feature film on the Vikings ever made. By Robert Eggers’ own admission, only the scene of Amleth’s initiation at the beginning of the story is pure fiction.

On the other hand, the funeral scene was copied from the account of Ibn Fablan, a tenth-century Rus. A story already adapted to the cinema by John McTiernan in 1999 in The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas.

Bill Skarsgård, Alexander Skarsgård’s younger brother, was supposed to play in The Northman but had to give up at the last moment because of the Covid-19 pandemic. He is the only Skarsgård brother who has not played a Viking in film or television. Gustaf, the third of the siblings, played Floki in the Vikings series.

River Bann

Located at the limit of the North Channel, this river whose name means “goddess” flows into the North Atlantic Ocean.

The longest river in Northern Ireland, the Bann originates in the Morne Mountains and feeds Loughs Bann and Neagh. It has long been exploited as part of the industrialization of the country, in particular to transport coal via the Newry canal. It is also widely seen as the natural boundary between the poorer, Irish and Catholic western region and the wealthier, British and Protestant eastern region.
