It is difficult today to recognize the street of Father Deval, so much Wes Anderson transformed it deeply for the needs of his film. Nevertheless, the stairs and walls are still there, with a graffiti or two thrown in. This is one of the many locations the filmmaker used for his ambitious shoot in Angouleme, incorporating elements in post-production.
The French Dispatch was a great challenge for everyone involved in its making. Kevin Timon Hill, the artistic director, spoke about this in the columns of the site Vice: “Wes truly does cast an eye over most things that make it on to a set long before the filming day. Nothing turns up on set that hasn’t been reviewed beforehand. There might also be a key reference, a loose rule, a banned colour or a ‘storybook feel’ that is explained that you have to keep in mind while drawing it up. I regularly review the brief when I’m working, asking myself if it captures the idea, and whether to throw it out and start over before even sending to Adam [Stockhausen] or Wes. “
For her part, Rena DeAngelo, the costume designer, recalled, still for Vice: “I thought Angoulême would be a logistical nightmare, being a five hour drive from Paris, but with the help of my local assistants, it wasn’t. The town itself was an inspiration. It had everything the script described in its architecture: winding hilly roads and staircases. It was the seedier version of Paris that Wes was looking for.”
900 residents of the city were hired by the production to act as extras in The French Dispatch.
34 Rue du Père Deval
This charming alley in the city center of Angoulême stands out in particular thanks to its small elbow staircase.
Close to sites such as the Charente prefecture, the museum and Saint-Pierre cathedral, rue du Père Deval is also distinguished by this curious blue door located at number 34. In the middle of the Saint-Gelais district, it sees all the days of locals and tourists. The latter do not fail to appreciate its intimate character. She also has a role in The French Dispatch, Wes Anderson’s tenth feature film.
