Much of Willow was shot in England, while George Lucas, the producer and writer of the story, opened the doors of his ranch. Other scenes, requiring very particular settings, also required a trip to New Zealand and in particular to the South Island.
An almost invisible island
Milford Sound, the famous New Zealand fjord, is then used to film the sequences around the lake. Fin Raziel’s (Patricia Hayes) island is Hidden Island, a tiny piece of land located on Lake Wakatipu, another famous body of water as picturesque as it is spectacular. No moving in is required to give the island its slightly eerie appearance.
Ron Howard, the great wizard
Hired by George Lucas to direct the film, Ron Howard did not want to get involved with as much intensity in the series telling the continuation of Willow’s adventures. Credited as executive producer, he nevertheless assured to read all the scripts, to watch all the rushes and to be really excited by the concept of this sequel. All this while specifying that “It’s great to see Warwick Davis in the role of Willow again. A wiser Willow, but still true to himself.“
The famous Wilhelm Scream sounds three times in Willow.
Hidden Island
This tiny island sits in the middle of Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand. It is dominated by Cecil Peak.
This small island takes its name from the fact that depending on where you look at it, it often remains invisible. It must be said that it only rises a few centimeters above the water. Lake Wakatipu, on which it is located, is huge. It is also the third largest in the country and the longest, with its 291 km. The lake itself was used as part of filming for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and the Top of the Lake series.
