Punitive expedition
Partly exploited in the final season of Game of Thrones, the city of Cáceres saw the return of the HBO team for the production of the spin-off House of the Dragon. City of diverse influences, crossroads of cultures, Caceres is notably the scene of the massacre perpetrated by Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) with his soldiers in the first episode of the series.
Popular because of the presence of the church of Santa Maria and the Episcopal Palace, this square alone embodies the picturesque character of the city. Beautifully preserved, it did not need any major development to fit into King’s Landing.
Miguel Sapochnik, one of the two showrunners of the series and director of the first episode, also shot in other streets around.
House of the Dragon is the seventh series in which Matt Smith is involved. He also played in Doctor Who and The Crown.
Plaza de Santa María
The most important square in Cáceres, the Plaza de Santa Maria was erected where the Roman forum once stood.
Former political and religious center of the city in the 13th century, this beach is famous for the Santa Maria church. A building enjoying the status of co-cathedral. This is where the city council met to dispense justice. The square also includes the Episcopal Palace, seat of the Coria-Cáceres bishopric. It was renovated in the 15th century.
