“The office he was in was on the fifth floor of the Portland Police Department, bright because of its large windows and most importantly – a rarity in law enforcement – large.”

The narrator

Maxime Chattam, alias Maxime Drouot, discovered the United States in 1987 during a trip with his parents. Their first destination is the city of Portland, Oregon. The young man then explored this city from across the Atlantic and was inspired by it. He has not yet chosen a career, but this trip will be engraved in his memory. Back in France, and a few years later, Maxime Chattam studied criminology at the University of Saint-Denis, where he became familiar with criminal psychology, technical and scientific police, and forensic medicine.

Portland in the web of evil

Intoxicated by his experience in Portland, the author chooses that city as the setting for the adventures of Joshua Brolin, a young police detective trained by the FBI to become a profiler. Portland Police Bureau

Formed in 1870, the Portland Police Bureau is one of the largest police forces in the United States, employing over 800 sworn members.

Between 1851 and 1870, Portland was protected by a marshal, sometimes elected and sometimes appointed for two years. Gradually, as the city’s population exploded, the lawman was assisted by deputies. In 1870, the city council decided to create the Portland Police Bureau to structure the new law enforcement agencies.

In 1908, Portland made history by hiring the first female officer, Lola Baldwin. The current building dates from 1984, when the 1913 headquarters at SW 2nd Ave and SW Oak St was demolished. It houses a museum tracing the history of public safety in the Rose City.
