Port of Pyk

TV show Game of Thrones (2011)
Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) returns to the Iron Islands after ten years as Lord Eddard Stark's (Sean Bean) ward at Winterfell. He docks in the small port of Pyk and goes to his father's castle. A well-known port in the Giant's Causeway region, located in Ballintoy.

“You gave me away like I was some dog you didn’t want anymore. And now you curse me because I’ve come home.”

Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen)

The scouting in Northern Ireland allows to retain several places among which are the most important of Game of Thrones. Located in the former Titanic shipyards in Belfast, the production offices and studios used for the main interior scenes, allow for travel back and forth between locations along the Irish coast such as the port of Ballintoy, which became the port of Pyk, the home of Theon Greyjoy, the character played by Alfie Allen.

Because of its unspoiled character, untouched by mass tourism and progress, the port of Ballintoy does not need much development to appear authentic. Boats are added and scenery is placed around the water before the actors and extras arrive. In the wake of this, the production also uses Ballintoy Bay to film the ceremonies given in honor of the Drowned God, in episode 3 of season 2 and in episode 5 of season 6. Episode 2 of season 2, in which Balon Greyjoy is buried, takes place on the village beach. Finally, the general states of the Ironborn royalty are located near the rope port of Carrick-a-Rede, near Ballintoy.

For the fans, Ballintoy becomes in a way the official village of the Greyjoys, the family of Theon, one of the main characters of Game of Thrones but also one of the most unfortunate. A character that allowed Alfie Allen to make a name for himself. The producers had proposed to Lily Allen, the sister of the actor, known for her career as a musician, to play Yara, the sister of the character. The latter having preferred to leave her place because of the scenes considered too equivocal. She was eventually replaced by Gemma Whelan.

Ballintoy Harbour

A small village in County Antrim, Ballintoy is particularly popular for its port. It was used during the filming of the Game of Thrones series.

Fewer than 200 people live in Ballintoy year-round. Nevertheless, many tourists flock there due to the popularity the place has gained thanks to Game of Thrones. The proximity of the Giant’s Causeway also contributes to making it an essential stopover. Ballintoy has several sites of interest such as its church, its pub, the Fullerton Arm, Dunseverick Castle, the Carrick-a-Rede code bridge or Sheep Island, also located in the vicinity.
