Among the most violent scenes in The Northman, the ball game sequence, shot in the Mourne Mountains, sees Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson return to the country, only a few years after playing Ser Gregor Clegane, aka the Mountain in Game of Thrones. An amusing detail given that the sequence in which he participates was shot on a site widely exploited in the HBO series.
Benefiting from the total collaboration of the government and the authorities, Robert Eggers was able to shoot all the scenes in Northern Ireland in absolute freedom. Plunged into a disturbing atmosphere, in the heart of grandiose landscapes, the sequence of the ball game has seen the former mountain and the strongest man in the world face Alexander Skarsgård in a duel to the death. The latter was also quickly interested in the role of Amleth, the Viking prince who was stripped of his title, as he explained to the site Den of Geek : “I grew up with our country house in southern Sweden being surrounded by runestones. So I’ve been fascinated by Vikings and that culture and that mythology since I was a kid.” It is not the first time that the actor plays a Viking since his character in the series True Blood was already one, transformed into a vampire several millennia before the story begins. Some fans were quick to declare that they thought The Northman was nothing less than the genesis of Eric, the character played by Alexander Skarsgård in True Blood. What Robert Eggers did not confirm, of course.

Mourne Mountains
A granitic mountain range located in the northeast of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Morne Mountains have gazed out over the ocean for millions of years.

Appearing many times in the Game of Thrones series, they also influenced CS Lewis for the Chronicles of Narnia and inspired John Lennon part of the song The Luck of the Irish on the album Some Time in New York City.
