Palace
The Palace is visible from the beginning of Stranger Things season 2. This is where kids flock to play Dragon’s Lair, an arcade hit often cited by fans as one of the most challenging video games of all time. The name Palace refers to the Crystal Palace of the cult film WarGames, released in 1983. A reference also exploited in the scenario of season 2. Both works are centered on a group of kids drawn into a high-risk adventure.
The decorators have done an extremely complicated job of recreating the atmosphere of the 1980s, and especially that of Dustin’s (Gaten Matarazzo) and his friends’ favorite arcade. It was, for example, extremely difficult to get hold of the original arcade terminals because of the rarity of some of them.
Known for its tasty references, Stranger Things has both obvious and subtle nods. The names of the characters, for example, often refer to emblematic actors. Dustin refers to Dustin Hoffman, Lucas to George Lucas, Hopper to Dennis Hopper and Steve to Steven Spielberg.
Dragon’s Lair is listed in the 1001 video games you must play before you die.
6500 Church St
Referenced on Google as Hawkins Palace Arcade, this Douglasville address is home to a video game room in the Stranger Things series.
In reality, 6500 Church Street is empty. Its architecture makes it a kind of relic of the 1980s where children used to come to have fun around the arcade terminals. Located west of Atlanta, Douglasville has 30,961 inhabitants. If it served as a filming location for Stranger Things, it has also served as a backdrop for works such as Hunger Games, The Founder or Kill the Messenger.
