Palace of the Dukes of Poitiers
After talking to the future king Charles VII (John Malkovich), Joan of Arc (Milla Jovovich) announces that she wants to liberate Orleans from the English siege and have Charles crowned in Reims.
The young woman’s statements are then verified. Yolande d’Aragon (Faye Dunaway), the king’s mother-in-law, certifies her virginity in the castle of Chinon, while clerics and doctors of theology question her in Poitiers. They attest to her qualities: “humility, virginity, devotion, honesty, simplicity.” In this way, the divine dimension of her mission is recognized and she can thus become head of the armies.
A scene as real in the film as it is in reality. In March 1429, the real Joan of Arc was interrogated in this palace, then called the Dukes’ Palace, before leaving to deliver Orleans.
If Luc Besson filmed important scenes from Joan of Arc in places where the events of the life of the Maidenhair did not take place (the cathedral of Sées as a backdrop to the cathedral of Reims), the room of the lost steps of the Palace of the Dukes of Poitiers is thus the true place of the interrogation undergone by the young woman.
Other places in the capital of Poitou mark the presence of Joan of Arc. Thus, a plaque in the rue de la cathédrale is affixed to the outside wall of the former Hôtel de la Rose, now gone, where she stayed. A statue of the saint can also be seen in a square next to the Dukes’ Palace. Made by Maxime Real del Sarte, it represents the winged Virgin Mary.
By the end of the film’s run, 9.2 million people had gone to theaters to see it. Worldwide revenues are $67 million.
