Chop Suicide!
First named “Suicide” because it evoked different ways of dying, Chop Suey! finally found its final title partly because of pressure from Columbia Records but also for the pun. “Suey” being the “diminutive” of Suicide while chop suey is an iconic Asian dish and completely unrelated to the lyrics.
Released at the beginning of 2001, the song quickly appeared in the list of “inappropriate songs” after the attacks of September 11. The line“I don’t think you trust in my self-righteous suicide” being particularly at issue.
Filming at the Oak Tree Inn
For the shooting of the clip, System of a Down launches a call on their website. They invite a thousand fans to join them for a shooting in “private concert” mode in a motel in Los Angeles, the Oak Tree Inn. In the end, 1,500 fans crowded into the small courtyard of the school instead of the maximum of 1,000 expected. The members of the group did not want to disappoint some of their fans from all over the country.
Marcos Siega is then sent to realize the clip and is inspired by the effects of the video ofAround the World of Red Hot Chili Peppers. The filmmaker also has Serj Tankian, the band’s lead singer, share a chop suey with fans, the only real reference to the song’s title.
We can also see an Armenian flag in the video, which echoes both the origins of the bassist Shavo, but also the neighborhood in which the video is shot, Little Armenia. Today, the Oak Tree Inn Motel is still in existence but has become a member of the Americas Best Value Inn chain.
On November 27, 2020, the video for Chop Suey! reached one billion views on YouTube.
