O2 Academy Oxford

Music Creep Radiohead (clip - 1992)
Radiohead made their first heroic breakthrough on the international scene with Creep. A song full of melancholy that has become over the years a real must-see, just like its video clip, shot in one of the of the temples of British music.

“I know I’m paranoid and neurotic, I’ve made a career out of it..”

Thom Yorke

It is on the benches of the university of Exeter, where Thom Yorke studies, that the first verses of Creep are born. Some time before, the young man had fallen in love with a girl but had never dared to approach her, even following her. The song tells this story, translating the obvious discomfort felt by the musician at the evocation of this one-way love. “I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo” The thoughts of an insecure boy, caught up in an irresistible attraction to a young woman he considers too good. She attended a concert of the group, while it was performing at the University of Exeter. When he sees it, whereas no word was never exchanged between them, Thom Yorke is mortified but ensures the spectacle, on the way to the glory.

The video for Creep consists of a live performance on the stage of the O2 Academy in Oxford. The group chose this club, then known as The Venue, because it is very attached to it, Thom Yorke and his friends having largely attended it in their youth. If the video uses the version of the album, Radiohead has played live, in front of a real audience. The effects are limited to a few spotlights and a light screen behind the drums. The Englishmen wrote the first really important chapter of their successful career in a sober manner.

Radiohead has six number one albums in the UK between 1993 and 2016.

O2 Academy Oxford

Oxford Club, the O2 Academy has changed its name and function many times since it opened in 1907.

Originally known as the Oxford Co-operative Society, the complex initially included shops, a large hall and a room for balls, concerts and political meetings. In 1990, the building was sold and later renamed The Zodiac. Shaped as a venue for bands, the place was renovated with the help of artists such as Supergrass and Radiohead. As the epicenter of the Oxford music scene, the club was a hotbed for local bands until 2007, when The Zodiac’s last night was held. It was then that this institution was renamed again and became the O2 Academy.
