North Island Naval Air Station

“We’re the best pilots in the world. Who could possibly be our instructor?”
Natasha “Phoenix” Trace (Monica Barbaro)
The first Top Gun left an indelible mark on San Diego and more particularly on the North Island Naval Air Station, a vast complex belonging to the US Army, attached to the Coronado base. Almost all the pilots here grew up with Top Gun and all of them consider Maverick, the hero played by Tom Cruise, as a true role model. From the beginning of the shooting, the return of the actor to San Diego provokes a strong emotion. Festivities are planned to celebrate the release of Top Gun: Maverick and reaffirm the city’s love for the cult film and its sequel.
For director Joseph Kosinski, it was obvious from the start that Top Gun: Maverick had to return to the North Island Naval Air Station. It is here that he films the arrival of Maverick on his legendary motorcycle, when he still thinks he is going to carry out a mission for the Navy. Unfortunately for him, his superiors have something else in mind and turn him into an instructor.

USNI News took advantage of the release of Top Gun: Maverick to interview an actual Navy lieutenant about the film. Bill Clyde, a member of the Navy Recruiting Command in Washington, D.C. said, “We love it The Navy sees the movie as being very positive, and it has been a plus for Navy interest.“. Commander David Benham, director of public affairs for the Navy Recruiting Command, said, “We think Top Gun: Maverick will certainly raise awareness and should positively contribute to individual decisions to serve in the Navy. Through our Navy Office of Information in Los Angeles, we will continue to support film and television projects, and to help Hollywood realistically and accurately characterize life in the world’s finest Navy..” As a reminder, the first Top Gun caused a sharp increase in applications from aspiring pilots.
Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are the only actors from the first Top Gun to reprise their roles in Top Gun: Maverick.
North Island Naval Air Station
Inaugurated in 1917, this naval base is one of the main ones on the west coast of the United States. It is an integral part of Naval Base Coronado.
The naval base airfield has more than 230 aircraft while two aircraft carriers anchor in its waters, the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The base also houses the Navy’s only deep submerged rescue vehicles. Considered the cradle of naval aviation, it plays a predominant role in the military strategy of the United States. She also shines in pop culture for having played a role in Tony Scott’s classic Top Gun.
