North Broadway Bridge
Determined to shoot Ambulance entirely in Los Angeles, Michael Bay wanted to make the city a character in its own right. A city that he travels from one end to the other, from posh neighborhoods to more popular streets. His film takes a stop in the canals of Los Angeles, where many feature films have already been shot.
The North Broadway Bridge is the backdrop for one of the most impressive sequences in Ambulance: the ambulance speeds by as Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Danny Sharp climbs out of the vehicle’s window to shoot at the police helicopter. All this without the use of computer generated images. Michael Bay is a great fan of old-fashioned action cinema and wanted to give his stunts maximum realism. Like James Cameron in his time, one of whose main sequences in Terminator 2 was shot in the dry riverbed of Los Angeles, Michael Bay has, in his turn, invested this emblematic place of the City of Angels.
Shot very quickly in a guerilla mode, in a city hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Ambulance marks the return to a more direct cinema after the Transformers saga. The opportunity for Michael Bay to continue to experiment, particularly through the use of cameras mounted on drones, to evolve his staging and thus sublimate iconic filming locations, such as the North Broadway Bridge. A fortunate building, since the director, who is adept at mass destruction, chose to spare it.
Ambulance marks Michael Bay’s third collaboration with composer Lorne Balfe, after 13 Hours and 6 Underground. The music was recorded in its entirety at Abbey Road Studios in London.
