Peach is kidnapped by Bowser who wants to marry her by force. Mario is the only hero who can save her. As with every Mario game, its quality does not come from its storyline but from its gameplay and execution.
Released at the beginning of the Nintendo Switch’s commercialization, like Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey takes full advantage of the game console’s features by offering a new concept.
During his odyssey, Mario meets Cappy, a top hat with amazing abilities. With a joy-con, the player can throw it (without letting go) so that Mario throws Cappy on an NPC. This simple action allows the plumber to take control of the said NPC, giving him new abilities to facilitate his quest.
Direction New Donk City
Mario travels to many countries around the world in a vehicle called the Odyssey. Bowser decided to get married on the moon. Mario is then forced to collect power moons to fuel the Odyssey, allowing the ship to travel further.
During his journey, Mario will stop in a country with a very particular style: the country of the Scratchers and its city, New Donk City.
After freeing the city from a Mechawiggler sent by Bowser, Mario (controlled by the player) discovers New Donk City, a city strongly inspired by New York with its buildings and yellow cabs.
It is represented by Pauline, the mayor of the city, who works in the city hall, a building that is none other than the Empire State Building. A nice nod to King Kong, who was already the primary inspiration for the character of Donkey Kong, the enemy of the first eponymous game where Mario, formerly called Jumpman, had to save Pauline from the clutches of the gorilla. A real return to the roots.
Ode to nostalgia
At first sight, New Donk City seems to be a totally opposite level of the Mario universe with its very realistic side and its “human” inhabitants. In fact, the city is a true love letter to this universe. It is full of references to the history of the plumber and his first rival Donkey Kong.
In addition to the 2D passages during the mythical festival where we face a Donkey Kong 8 bit sending barrels, the city is strewn with nods including red beams of construction, street names such as Dixie Street and Cranky Avenue or the costume to unlock which is none other than the outfit of Mario in the series Mario Maker.
With this opus, Myamoto, the co-creator of Mario, said that he wanted to return to the origins of the series in 3D by getting closer to the main target of the old games and away from the more recent ones.
Thus, the game offers a real nostalgic adventure for lovers of the Nintendo mascot.
The world speedrun record in any% for Super Mario Odyssey is 56 minutes and 55 seconds. It is held by the Italian Tyron18.
Empire State Building
A true star of the New York skyline, the Empire State Building has inspired many authors and has appeared in numerous works.
One of his works stands out in particular and has left its mark on generations of film lovers: the film King Kong (1933). The mythical Art Deco building, inaugurated in 1931, is one of the most famous buildings in the world.
Its name comes from “The Empire State”, the nickname of the state of New York.
Having been the world’s tallest skyscraper until 1967, it is now New York’s third tallest (381 m and 443 m with its antenna), behind 432 Park Avenue (425 m) and the One World Trade Center (541 m).
The lobby of the Empire State Building reflects the image of the building: huge! It is the equivalent of three storeys high and is richly decorated in marble with an aluminium relief representing the silhouette of the monument. Its 86th floor observatory offers a breathtaking view of the metropolis.
If you visit during the day, please keep your ticket in your pocket, as it will allow you to go back up for free in the evening to admire the city in a different light.
