Mount Sentinel
It’s November 20, 2019 when Netflix commissions Molly Smith Metzler to direct a ten-episode miniseries based on Stephanie Land’s memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive.
The book tells the story of how the author, after suffering domestic violence at the hands of her granddaughter’s father, decided to take her life into her own hands by becoming a housekeeper in the hope of returning to school.
If it is in Port Townsend in the state of Washington that Stephanie Land lived, the production of the mini-series prefers to create a fictional version of the city resulting from a skilful collage of various places of the area of Victoria in Canada. It is thus on the other side of the American border that the majority of the scenes are shot.
Yet, when it comes to the story’s conclusion, Molly Smith Metzler chooses to shoot in Missoula, where Stephanie Land has returned to school after successfully emancipating herself from her abusive boyfriend. The final sequences of Maid are shot on Mount Sentinel, when Alex Russell (Margaret Qualley) climbs the mountain with her daughter Maddy, to reach the giant M overlooking the university’s main building. Having finally achieved her goal, the young woman can rest and look forward to the future with more serenity.
Five directors have taken turns behind the camera, including John Wells, one of the iconic producers and directors of the series ER.
Mount Sentinel
Previously known as Mount Woody, Mount Sentinel is more than just a mountain. It is first and foremost a symbol for all students at the University of Montana.
Mount Sentinel rises to 596 meters. At its summit, the large white concrete M stands at 189 meters. Its history dates back to 1902, when the Northern Macific Railroad Company donated land on the side of the mountain to the University of Montana. This donation made the university the only one in the United States to have a mountain on its campus. On this site, previously occupied by a glacial lake of which some traces still remain today, the M was first traced by students in 1909. At the time, it was made of whitewashed rocks. In 1912, it was replaced by a wooden structure. When in 1914, the wind destroyed the M, it was replaced by a new one, which was knocked down the following year. It was not until 1968 that a concrete M was built to withstand the elements. In the past, before the final M was positioned on top of the mountain, freshmen used to repaint it every year. The University of Montana has hosted a few celebrities including actor J.K. Simmons and Jeff Ament, bassist for the grunge band Pearl Jam.
