Morrison Hotel

Music Morrison Hotel The Doors (album - 1970)
Sometimes things happen by chance. In the case of the Doors, it was the chance appearance of the Morrison Hotel that somewhat upset their plans.

“Some of the worst mistakes of my life have been haircuts.”

Jim Morrison

The story of Morrison Hotel finds its genesis in Miami. In March 1969, the Doors are scheduled to perform at the Dinner Key Auditorium. The members of the group quickly regret their choice since nothing goes as planned. The concert venue is designed for only 7,000 people and without air conditioning. 12,000 fans will finally cram into this hangar, normally intended for Pan American World Airlines.

Moreover, Jim Morrison arrives more than an hour late. Totally drunk, the singer can’t manage to string together the lyrics of his own songs. In his usual “rebel attitude”, Jim Morrison accumulates obscene gestures and indecent words. Behaviors that many consider shocking and will lead the artist to justice.

Start of Morrison Hotel

It was not until June that the story settled down somewhat. The album The Soft Parade, released in July, went unnoticed because of these antics. It is then time for the group to find new ideas. Another album is in the works and the combo is walking around Los Angeles with their photographer Henri Diltz in search of inspiration. They then stumbled upon the aptly named Morrison Hotel.

Faced with the surprising coincidence, Jim Morrison and his companions decided to take a few photos in front of the building, before asking permission to take others inside. However, the manager refuses. But that’s not knowing the Doors very well. Patiently, the combo waits for the man to be busy elsewhere. At the first absence of his post, the four members of the group rush inside and ask Henri Diltz to take a picture. It is finally this photo that will be on the front of the album. The title then goes without saying, Morrison Hotel.

On the road to history

Their move well done, the combo then goes to write a new page of the History by going to a few blocks away, to take a drink at the Hard Rock café. But that’s a whole other story.

1246 Hope St

Once a Los Angeles hotel, 1246 Hope St is in the midst of a massive real estate redevelopment project.

A residential tower, a 25-story hotel and 222 parking spaces are planned as part of the renovation of this Los Angeles block. However, the 1246 Hope St project should keep many elements of the mythical Morrison Hotel.
