Monument to the dead
The small town of Chipping Campden hosts the filming of the first scenes of Lockwood & Co. when the character played by Ruby Stokes is forced into an apprenticeship. The only significant change to Market Hall, Chipping Campden’s covered market place, is the construction of a very realistic war memorial with the names of fallen ghost hunters.
Cradle of spectres
Several sequences of the first episode of Lockwood & Co. take place on Market Hall and other surrounding areas in Chipping Campden. The city is also used for the trial sequence, filmed in the old police station. Chipping Campden has also appeared in Bridget Jones’ Diary and the BBC series Father Brown.
Successful adaptation
Joe Cornish had the difficult task of adapting Jonathan Stroud’s novels. He spoke about this complex work to the Coming Soon website: “The books are really great. We discovered them 10 years ago, when only the first volume was released. We tried to put an option on it but a Hollywood studio beat us to it. Finally, 5 years ago, the books were available again. So we bought them. The construction of the whole universe is so clever. The basic rules are simple, but the idea that just touching the ghosts can cause death changes the whole dynamic.”
Joe Cornish also appreciated the Charles Dickensian aspect of the story, with this society exploiting teenagers, the only ones who can see ghosts and therefore fight them.
The first season of Lockwood & Co. has 8 episodes.
National Trust - Market Hall
Built in 1927 in the center of Chipping Campden, the Market Hall consists of a covered market recognizable by its arches.
Developed around the wool trade, the village of Chipping Campden is located in the Cotswold district. A favored tourist destination thanks to its typical shops, restaurants and cozy hotels, Chipping Campden is also famous for its Market Hall, a covered market located near St. James’s Church, another monument in the region.
